Palin's Pro Life Stance

I had a disturbing conversation with my co-worker today. She said she was for Palin until she heard the "dumb" comment she made to Katie Couric. (Which by the way, she thinks Katie Couric is soooo smart.)

This the comment she was disturbed by:

"If a 15-year-old is raped by her father," Couric asked, "do you believe it should be illegal for her to get an abortion, and why?"

Palin called herself "unapologetic" in her pro-life stance. "I would counsel to choose life. I would also like to see a culture of life in this country. But I would also like to take it one step further. Not just saying I am pro-life and I want fewer and fewer abortions in this country, but I want them, those women who find themselves in circumstances that are absolutely less than ideal, for them to be supported, and adoptions made easier."

On being pressed by Couric on whether she would force a victim of incest or rape to have the child, Palin said, "...personally, I would counsel the person to choose life, despite horrific, horrific circumstances that this person would find themselves in. And, if you're asking, though, kind of foundationally here, should anyone end up in jail for having an...abortion, absolutely not. That's nothing I would ever support." After repeated questioning about her position on the morning-after pill, Palin repeated her views and said that she would "not choose to participate in that kind of contraception."

I completely agree with her stance. I don't think it is "dumb." I believe abortions should only be allowed in extreme cases when a women's life is at risk. This is very rare.

I don't think Palin's comments were dumb. I just think some people don't agree with her stance. Fine to not agree but to call them dumb is just dumb.

I AGREE WITH SARA PALIN ON HER STANCE ON ABORTION. NO MATTER WHAT YOU CALL IT, IT IS STILL MURDER. I HAVE A NIECE WHO WAS RAPED AND SHE ALMOST HAD AN ABORTION,BUT COULD NOT GO THROUGH WITH IT. HER DAUGHTER IS NOW 10 YEARS OLD AND IS THE SWEETEST GIRL THERE IS. WE THANK GOD EVERYDAY FOR THIS LITTLE GIRL.

I love your site! Saw a brief glimpse of it in a rare moment of watching CNN. Way to go!

I totally agree with Sarah's stand on rape - it's not the baby's fault for some animal's moment of sick gratification. Ripping that innocent child from the victim's womb only multiplies the trauma. I believe with all my heart that abortion scars a woman physically and emotionally. We are naturally compassionate and empathetic and the knowledge that we have been responsible for the deliberate destruction of an innocent life is more painful than anything a man can do to us.
I cannot understand any woman who would defend even demand abortion - unless they are acting out of their own pain and sense of guilt and feel they must justify their past actions. What they need is healing and the knowledge that there is forgiveness and redemption.

Whether or not you condone abortion, specifically in cases of rape or incest, is indeed about point of view, so "dumb" is not a good way to describe what Palin said. Although like a lot of Americans, I do think that it is an abhorrent and extremist position. But it comes down to one's ideology about what our goals ought to be.

But there is a time when words like "smart" or "dumb" are appropriate, and that's when you're talking about which measures are objectively most effective at accomplishing a goal.

One goal that most Republicans and Democrats both have in common is to reduce the number of abortions. But the tactics pursued by a lot of social conservatives are disastrously ineffective ("dumb").

Abstinence-only sex education is an example. It causes more unwanted pregnancies, which results in more abortions.

Pro-corporate economic policies that decrease the prosperity of the middle and lower-class are another. When people are less wealthy, it is more likely that they will decide against taking on the cost of taking time off work, and especially of raising a child.

Your blog sub-title is "Fight the Lies". But there have been a lot of indisputable lies uttered by Palin, that you can verify through non-partisan sites like FactCheck.org. Here are a few:

Palin could not have asked her girls for permission to accept McCain's veep offer if she also says she accepted the offer unblinkingly and right away. Palin did fire a police chief even as she insisted to a reporter she hadn't. She did violate the confidential medical records of Mike Wooten. She hasn't met with any trade missions from Russia. She does not have any gay friends that anyone can find. She did not oppose the Bridge to Nowhere. She did not sell that plane on eBay. Her Teleprompter did not fail in her convention speech. Alaska's state scientists did not conclude that polar bears were in no danger. She did deny publicly that humans had anything to do with climate change.

Alaska does not provide "nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy," as she claimed. The gas pipeline she touts as her major "mission accomplished" has not broken ground and may never do so. She did not take a pay-cut as mayor of Wasilla. And on and on. Anyone with Google can check all of these out. Including reporters.

Will you hold Palin accountable for her numerous lies, in the same way you would hold Obama or Biden accountable?

I think you also engage in a fallacy of putting so much emphasis on the abortion issue, while ignoring the hundreds of thousands of deaths and and maimings that have occurred as a result of our needless and economically ruinous invasion of Iraq.

You can save a lot more lives by choosing competent leaders who weigh objective facts, and put diplomacy ahead of the last resort of military action.

While I do not believe in abortion for birth control I do believe a woman has the right to choose what she does with her body. I applaud Ms Palin for going through with her pregnancy, what I do not believe in is what she did hiding it and then ultimately putting her babies' life on the line by not seeking medical attention and staying put until she delivered her pre-mature baby. I have seen babies and moms alike put in danger of loosing their lives because they ignored the fact that their sac ruptured.

My question is what was so important she could not stay put until her baby was born? Work...not worth in my book.

Moms for Michelle is much more democratic. If the mommies of the US of A want to raise their kids with a good social Health system, you should consider to vote Obama/Biden ticket. Just because abortion is something you find soooo important, is not a reason to go vote for Republican due to Mrs. Palin.

Its single minded and very, I mean verryy unsavvy.

Don't you moms wanna raise their kids in a save and non-hatred and non-irratic McCain powered country?

Think again. There is more in life than abortion...and Sarah Palin.

Let everybody choose their own way of living. In Europe we had a revolution in the 1970 / 1980's when woman screamed for abortion rights and they won.. Now they can choose.

Choose wisely, and not for your personal gains. Its Sooooo Republican ;)

All children are blessings.

As a therapist, who has worked with many teen girls, impregnated through rape...I would only counsel for life.

Nobody can take away the rape and violation, but to bring on further destruction only exacerbates the pain.

A young girl who aborts, will not only live with the shame of being raped, but with the terrible guilt of killing her own child.

A young girl who gives birth (and puts the child up for adoption, or keeps it with support)....has learned one of life's most precious lessons, that even in the darkest situation, good things can happen. That a dark valley can have a light of hope....it's like a bright flower that rises up from the ashes...they will learn that they can love, that they are valuable, and that they were able to move through a tragedy and do something good. They will have to deal with the rape, but instead of the guilt of abortion, they will have gained empowerment for not being a victim again.

God bless Sarah Palin. We finally have a true woman, and not an activist fighting to rip babies from the womb.

I disagree with most of palins views. though i do feel for her having a special needs infant. I understand i also have a special needs son. But i feel that her abortion ideas are wrong. especially for rape and incest victims. I feel it would be very traumatic for a young girl to carry her fathers child inside of her. and deliver it. the incest alone is traumatic let alone living with it inside of you for 9 months. that is a sickening and degrading option.
Also i disagree with her aerial snipering she allows in alaska to the wolves and polar bears.

I am all for abortion as i am a man and will never have to have one. if i was a woman even if i didnt feel as if i would personally have an abortion. I am a free thinking individual who would never want the government or anyone to tell me how to deal with my personal problems. the problem with the "Christan cult" is that they want to pass along there feelings and beliefs. This is America and there is a seperation of churh and state. I dont understand why if you believe that abortion it is bad what gives you the right to judge. Why is this country stuck with this when all other advanced cultures like europe has ahd it dealt with and have moved on. it is morally wrong to impose your velievs on the nation. Sarah palin is dangerous. I can guarantee that the people on this blog and the person that started it are ignorant, ill travelled and non wordly. honestly how many of you guys have passports? and travel frequently. i do and all over the world everyone asks what is the deal with you americans why do you have to bring religious beliefs into politics? What world leader that you have ever known is a mom like you guys. Obama wether you like it or not is a brilliant studied scholar.this is what we need. sarah payless is ill prepared and ill educated. she got lucky in alaska as its a tiny state. i ask you to please reconsider sarah is a really nice mom and a great gal but thats not want the world needs. please get out of your mini van heads and super church mentality with a walmart and chilis in your back garden. there is a huge world out there that is just saying please no more republicans. and finally just remember this that is fact and means everything mc cain voted 90% of the time with bush. he is the same and you are all ignorant for thinking that he will be different. why would you think he would change after 26 years? god bless america and the people like you. please dont vote and keep your religious feelings to yourself

I would be interested in knowing how you feel about Gov. Palin's stance as pro-life when she is pro-death penalty. If the Bible says, "Thou shall not kill" then I don't think you can be selective. Saying that the death penalty is OK in "heinous" cases should be the equivalent of saying abortion is ok in certain cases. So, is she pro-life or pro-choice depending on the situation. No doubt a fetus is innocent, no doubt some terrible criminals are not, but who are we to pass the final judgement when God says that we should not.

To all you mom's i hope you are praying for peace in our country and life for all. Because your hockey mom is stirring up so much hate for african americans. I expect to see lynchings come back into play. yes killing live human beings what your group deplores justified by a political campaign. Take a close look at the audience at the republican speeches. May god bless you all.

It blows my mind that so many voters seem to place greater value on who they would invite to a BBQ than on who will do the better job in office. The fact of the matter is that like her or not, Sarah Palin is unfit to lead. Her lack of executive experience aside, she has fumbled through every interview she has given. Congratulations to the Republican for their reactionary choice of a woman as their VP candidate. The Democrats did it first and based their choice on qualifications, not merely winning over a group of conservative wing nuts who fundamentally misunderstand the foundations upon which this nation was built. But I'm not angry, because Barack Obama will be our next President. Don't worry, I'm sure Fox News will give Palin a primetime spot when the Republicans lose the election, which is good news for the rest of us, because it guarantees years of fodder for Tina Fey's spot-on rendition of this deer in headlights.

I'm amazed at how often the liberal, biased media pulls the "rape or incest" card when talking about abortion. While very tramatic, the instances are rare in comparison to the number of abortions performed each year. Abortion is now just another form of birth control. Another example of preservation of self.

I don't understand why people are against Choice, when the "choice" is life. Nor do I understand why we fight for a woman's right to education and advancement but we don't want to allow them to make an educated decision by requiring a wait period and "seeing" their child in the womb before chosing to abort.

Another apparent contradiction is a person can be held accountable for a double homicide for killing a pregnant woman, but the woman is free to "chose" to kill another man's child that happens to be growing in her womb.

Or, if a man wants that child, he has no rights. But if he doesn't, and she carries to term, he is then slapped with paternity and child support.

Seems an awfully SELF-CENTERED issue to me. It's not really about anything other than letting people do what they want and not feel bad about the consequences.

Did anyone just say.."Bailout"???

Palin is so pro-life that she put in jeapardy the life of her own unborn child to get on a plane and fly all the way from Alaska to Houston to give a keynote speech. She gave the speech while she was in labor, got back on the plane and gave birth within hours of landing. There is a reason why the airlines don't want women in their last month of pregnancy to fly. That's what great judgement she has. And she's so busy being Gov of Alaska, that she doesn't have the time to talk about the birds and bees with her teenage daughter. There's another judgement call. She's so ready for the job that the Republicans won't let her out in the open to speak with people and talk about anything other than the usual talking points.

Great site. This country is great because of people like you. We all need to pray that this country gets back on the right track. If we all work hard we can defeat the ACORN nuts. I always watch FOX but just happened to see your site while checking to see if CNN was awake and reporting the truth. Governor Palin is just what this country needs to put the government back on the side of the people.

I'm a disabled veteran and served during the 70's. I remember very well the actions of the domestic terrorist Bill Ayers. What did Bill Ayers see in Senator Obama that he would hire him to head up his radical education program. If everyone reading this blog is really concerned about this country they should find out all they can about Senator Obama. Our national security depends on it. I know you are angry about the direction this country is going but you don't have to run it into the ground. Senator Obama's associations tell a lot about who he is. You are judged by the company you keep. Please take the time to search for the truth.

AS Evelyn Beatrice Hall (1868-1919) wrote: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

I do not personally and I am Catholic believe it is any-one's right to tell a woman what to do if she has been raped in any fashion. This is a decision for her and her God.

I deeply resent all the negative attacks on BOTH sides, this isn't right and what we all should be concerned and focused on is the Economy.

While I disagree with what most of you are writing here, I will not call you names, I will not yell horrible words at you and I will not make up horrid jokes about anyone whose opinion differs from mine, would you give me the same Christian charity? I wonder...

To coin a phrase, you can't be a little pregnant. Regarding the idea of abortion, you can't have it "allowed in extreme cases" and still be "un-apologetically" pro life. You're either for the right to choose or for the condemnation of women.
The point is... you and many others are anti-abortion but pro choice. Vote with your convictions.

email to Tami (since various mothers for Palin won't post my comments...)
Tami,
I, as a rational, Christian, higher-degreeed-but-always-home-when-my-kids-are-home, Southern Baptist mother and educator, have left at least five comments, very well put (I am a published author) comments which haven't been posted on the blog. I challenge you as Christian mothers to go to the Word. "Judge not lest ye be judged" is for real. Sarah Palin doesn't behave like a Christian, and you are harming the faith by supporting her publicly. She bashes others, and she lies. Her talk is smoke and mirrors. A Christian should never attack others. It is inappropriate, and if you are a true Christian you know this, to question one person who claims to be a believer, Obama, (because he is black? because he is a Democrat?) and take another, McCain, at his word.
You ladies hit me as new Christians. While I am thrilled I will see you in Heaven (notice I take you at your word that you are Christians, as it is only for Him to judge), I ask you to go in prayer to the Lord regarding gossip. Go to the word. See what he has to say about judging others, and the evils of the tongue.
My Democratic party membership represents in a public way some of the best precepts regarding my faith in Jesus. Lifting up others. Caring for the least of my brethern. A servant's heart. All of the proverbs---taking care of the prodigal with a joyful heart. Being the good Samaritan. Republicans do not do these things. Democrats do.
As an older Christian, I tried to blog my wisdom, but I never saw any of my posts. I have started churches in my time, raised children mine and not my own, served in my church, and spend much time on my knees. It is not difficult to see that narrow-mindness, judging, and supporting killing are anti-Biblical. Period. Your Lord would not have you bomb your enemies. He instructs you to love them. That doesn't involve killing them. That doesn't involve rationalizing. He tells you to love them. It takes much study and time in prayer to understand these things. I do not believe you, or Sarah Palin, as Republicans do. We as Christians are instructed to ALWAYS serve and care for the least of these. Yet, republicans are against social programs which do exactly that. Separation of church and state isn't biblical. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. You ladies need to actually understand this. My treasure, including, it is my prayer, my treasure as a citizen of this great nation, needs to be where it serves my breathern.
So, with not posting the blogs I have posted, I sense fear of freedom of speech, and closed-mindedness. Not Christian behavior, ladies. If you are truly in the word, you've NOTHING to fear, and peace in your hearts! Not politicians, not the economy, not anything.
I will be interested to see if you are able to respond to me, and I'll keep all of you in my prayers, specifically and by name, to have your hearts opened to His Word.
God bless you.
